What To Expect
Monarch Butterfly Biosphere Reserve
Experience Mexico’s hidden magic with an awe-inspiring natural phenomenon! Every year, during winter the Monarch Butterfly start their migration from the forest of Canada to the sanctuaries in Mexico. As it is not typical tourist fare, it is important to have a guide who knows the area well and can ensure that the entire trip will be a memorable experience.
From México city, we'll drive to the small and peaceful community "Matías Romero" (near Zitácuaro Michoacán). Here we'll meet a VILLAGER who will prepare horses for us before guiding us through lush jungle to the Sanctuary of Cerro Pelón (from the side of Estado de México and Michoacán).
Once we reach the sanctuary a forest ranger will give us an explanation of this fantastic phenomenon.
By the end of the experience we'll have the option to see some of Zitácuaro and eat at the market before making our way back to Mexico City.
Notes:
1) All charges (excluding food and tips) are included.
2) Please bring water, snacks, clothing appropriate for the cold and comfortable shoes.
3) I will provide you with an expert who will guide the horses, provide safety equiptment, and ensure you are comfortable.
4) The riding on horses has an estimated time of 2 hrs.

We had a nice drive with some background information of the areas we were driving through. Then onto the horses which were kept by a local family. You will go up to a flat ranger area, and from then walk up to the sanctuary. Once there we saw an orange haze on the evergreen trees! When the sun comes out they start fluttering around. It's great!
Then back down, and maybe you'll need a little help getting off the horses, because it is a little work out :).
It's all a lovely trip and our guide was personable, we could talk to him about anything.

A truly memorable and authentic day with butterflies

This was such a memorable and authentic experience that we will never forget. We rode horses up the mountain to where the butterflies were (no experience required) and were amazed at the site of thousands of butterflies flying around in every direction. It was wild. We also saw bunches of them sitting in the trees. Magical. After spending a few hours with the butterflies, we rode the horses back down and had an authentic meal with a family in the village. It tasted so fresh and so good. Our tour guide José was so friendly and communicative the whole trip. An amazing day that we highly recommend to anyone who wants to see the butterflies.

So glad we booked this trip.
Our friendly and very knowledgeable drive José took us from our hotel to the nature reserve where we mounted the horses that took us up the mountain.
There we walked a bit further to let the horses enjoy the tour as well.
When we reached ther gathering place, there were more butterflies than I had hoped for - even in early December. The peak is in February...
Due to this being a nature reserve we were up there alone, which is totally different to the other much more frequented places - and we were able to stay there for a coule of hours.
Make sure to tip the local guides (farmes and rangers), who are also very nice and explain a bit about thee migration.
On the way back we also learnt a lot about the different parts of the Mexico city.
This is an experience that you should not miss. It is totally worth it!

The Butterfly Sanctuary excursion with Jose was the best experience I've ever had!! Riding the horses up the cool beautiful mountains was out of thus world!!! As we went up the mountains we began to see butterflys

The monarch butterfly migration was at the top of my bucket list and I have accomplished the most amazing experience thanks to our tour guide Jose. It was an adventure on the amazing and most beautiful horses we rode up to the migration. And to sit and have lunch and watch the butterflies come in and nest on the trees was an amazing serene and beautiful experience. There are some sanctuaries that are easier to get to cheaper to attend but this was a adventure unique of any other. I do recommend. Jose thank you for showing us an amazing safe and caring experience
